Why does your Abies nordmanniana have fine webbing? Diagnose the cause and fix it with our step-by-step guide.
The most common cause of fine webbing on Nordmann fir is spider mites, which thrive in hot, dry conditions. They pierce the needles to feed on cell contents, causing stippling and eventually leading to needle drop.
While not a separate pest, physiological drought stress in Nordmann fir weakens the tree's natural defenses, making it much more susceptible to heavy mite webbing. The fine webbing becomes more pronounced as the needles desiccate.
These microscopic mites can create fine silken structures on the needles of conifers. Unlike spider mites, they tend to cause more localized swelling or distortions in the needle structure rather than widespread webbing.
