Why does your Areca catechu have brown leaf tips? Diagnose the cause and fix it with our step-by-step guide.
Areca palms are tropical plants that require high ambient humidity. When air is too dry, transpiration occurs faster than the roots can supply water to the leaf extremities, causing tips to desiccate and turn brown.
The buildup of salts from tap water (sodium/calcium) or excessive fertilizer can cause osmotic stress at the leaf margins. This is particularly common in Areca palms which are sensitive to fluoride and chloride found in municipal water.
Areca palms prefer consistently moist but well-draining soil. Allowing the root ball to dry out completely between waterings creates moisture stress that manifests as scorched leaf tips.
While low moisture causes tip burn, excessive water leads to anaerobic conditions in the soil. This damages the fine root hairs responsible for transporting water to the leaves, leading to apparent dehydration symptoms like brown tips.
