Why does your Broccoli Thunder Dome have fine webbing? Diagnose the cause and fix it with our step-by-step guide.
Pet FriendlySpider mites thrive in the warm, dry conditions often found in broccoli crops. They pierce the leaf cells to suck out nutrients, leaving behind fine silk webbing and characteristic stippling (tiny white dots) on the underside of the leaves.
In dense-growing varieties like 'Thunder Dome', high humidity and heat can trigger rapid mite population growth. The webbing is a protective structure created by the mites to shield their eggs from predators and desiccation.
While thrips are more known for scarring, their movement and feeding can sometimes be associated with light silken traces in heavy broccoli foliage. They cause silvering or browning of the leaf tissue.
