Why does your Onion Takstar F1 have tiny black flies? Diagnose the cause and fix it with our step-by-step guide.
The larvae of these flies live in the upper layers of organic matter and feed on fine root hairs of the onion. Their presence often indicates that the soil is consistently too moist, which promotes fungal growth that attracts the adults.
While usually identified by larvae, the adult flies lay eggs at the base of the onion bulb. If the flies are congregating around the stem, they may be searching for soft tissue to deposit eggs that will later cause tunneling and rot.
Excessive amounts of uncomposted manure or decomposing organic mulch can attract various small Diptera (flies). The smell of fermentation or decomposition attracts these insects to the onion bed.
