Why does your Rhododendron hybridum hot have brown leaf tips? Diagnose the cause and fix it with our step-by-step guide.
Rhododendrons are sensitive to high concentrations of mineral salts. Excess fertilizer or hard water buildup causes osmotic stress, drawing moisture out of the leaf margins and resulting in crispy brown tips.
While Rhododendrons prefer moist soil, they cannot tolerate drying out completely. When the root system loses access to water, the plant sacrifices the leaf margins first to conserve moisture in the center of the leaf.
Excessive moisture in poorly draining soil can lead to fungal root rot. As the roots decay, they lose the ability to transport water to the leaf extremities, causing the tips to turn brown and die.
Rhododendrons thrive in humid environments; extremely dry air, especially from indoor heating or summer heatwaves, can increase the transpiration rate beyond what the roots can support.
